EUROPEAN COMMISSION APPROVES ERICEIRA SURF CLUBE PROJECT TO CELEBRATE THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE WORLD SURFING RESERVE

Date

Ericeira Surf Clube (ESC) recently saw a European application for the Erasmus + Sport 2020 program approved by the European Commission to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Ericeira’s World Surfing Reserve – EWSR.

EWSR celebrates its 10th anniversary on October 14, 2021. To celebrate the importance of this event, the Ericeira WSR + 10 event will take place over a year and will include multidisciplinary initiatives and activities, from conferences to training, including scientific studies and workshops, promoting sustainability through surfing.

Miguel Barata de Almeida, president of ESC, considers that “the approval of this application of the “Ericeira WSR + 10” project, from Erasmus + Sport, promoted by the European Commission, crowns a work that we have been developing at Ericeira Surf Clube in several areas, over the last few years. It has enormous significance for all of us, in the sense that we will celebrate, in 2021, the 10 years of Ericeira’s World Surfing Reserve, making available to the community the possibility of developing several actions that we consider structural for our region and country. The project will have some of its most remarkable moments in the week of October 14, 2021, with an event that will count on the presence of 11 delegates, among the European partners involved, and a Study of the Impact of WSR in Ericeira in the last 10 years.”

The European Commission’s financial support is complemented by support from institutional and private sponsors, at the regional, national and international levels.

A good part of this financing is destined to trips, stays and activities directed to the delegations of the partners who will participate in the initiatives promoted by this event, which will bring about two hundred representatives from ten countries, including Portugal, to Ericeira.

Ericeira’s World Surfing Reserve is the only one on the European continent, integrating a global network under the tutelage of Save the Waves Coalition, an international association that created this program with the aim of preserving and promoting coastal regions with waves of unique quality – in Ericeira is a coastal strip of 4 kilometers that includes seven waves of unique characteristics (Pedra Branca, Reef, Ribeira d’Ilhas, Cave, Crazy Left, Coxos and São Lourenço), their respective landscapes and ecosystems.

This year, 14 projects were approved by the European Commission, resulting from a total of 79 proposals for non-profit sporting events, of which only two will be held in Portugal: Promote Physical Activity and Sport Using the Public Space – Urban Sports 4all, promoted by Lisbon City Hall, and Ericeira WSR + 10, organized by Ericeira Surf Clube. In seven years of Erasmus + Sport, there have been only three events held in our country, including these two.

The Ericeira WSR + 10 event will start between the end of this year and the beginning of 2021.
